Hi, I’m Alex.

(Oh no, I said that already, didn’t I?)

I’ve been working in design research since 2011. For the first five years of my career, I worked in academia. This experience let me think deeply about systems, experiment with unconventional research questions and methods, and lead engagement with public sector stakeholders.

Since then, I’ve been working as a consultant, both independently and within a small agency setting. I’ve worked with clients ranging from startups, to Fortune 100 companies, to federal research agencies, in a wide variety of sectors, including tech, automotive, retail and health.

Although I have specialized expertise in inclusive design and digital health, consulting has made me a deep generalist. I’ve managed projects from scoping and budget planning, through synthesis and reporting. I’ve developed an agile approach to research design and solutioning—focusing on methods and concepts that can scale with clients’ evolving needs and constraints. I’ve also learned to manage people and relationships. The biggest challenge of consulting is quickly adapting to an organization’s culture so you can tailor your strategic guidance effectively. I’ve come to think of product teams as users themselves—to size up their needs, beliefs, barriers and enablers so I can provide them with the solutions, support and mentorship they need.

My Design Philosophy

I’m passionate about systems thinking and ‘designing from the margins.’ I believe that seeking out edge cases and overlooked perspectives is the best way to innovate and solve wicked problems for everyone.

My work is guided by the following values and principles.

  1. Champion your most marginalized users.

  2. Design against barriers and pain points is crucial to designing for ideal outcomes.

  3. Think about systems, not just isolated products.

  4. Think about the meaning of users' experiences.

  5. Diverse perspectives lead to innovative solutions.

  6. Have fun! Accessibility is only a chore when you treat it like one.
